Still life

Still life photography is the capture of inanimate objects often grouped or arranged into a visually pleasing array by the photographer, lighting and composition of the image play a key part in the outcome.

Annabelle Breakey

Breakey has been taking pictures since 1990, she has a large list of clients ranging from Starbucks to Microsoft and various magazines.

This image is rather simple yet still manages to be visually appealing to the viewer and capture their attention. There is limited depth to the scene although everything remains in focus. We can see a collection of ice lollies in a pale bowl, suspended in ice and one on a plate below. The only use of colour from the dark red lollies themselves and some napkins that protrude in the bottom left corner, the rest remains pale and muted bringing your attention to the actual items rather than elsewhere in the image, the subject is the lollies, that's the only item you consciously look at.

Jonathan Knowles

Knowles is a London based photographer, his work includes liquid, still life and people. His work has gained him awards for national and international advertising commissions with agencies worldwide.

The plan white background of this image makes the bright colours seem even more vibrant and stand out. We see two aspects in this one picture, on the left nail varnish has been captured as it drips downwards mid movement, on the right hand side we see the aftermath, the puddle of colours left behind . The use of lighting makes this image seem almost 3D as we can see the contours clearly based on how much light is hitting each area.

Xavier Young
Xavier young is a photographer based in London and Brighton, he specialises in fashion photography.

We can see a pair of hands holding up a collection of colourful flower heads, set against a pale background as colour appears to be dripping from them. The use of colour is striking as they're vivid in an otherwise muted image. Subjectively the melting colour could show decay as the hands try to hold onto something as it breaks down and escapes, lasting only for a finite time.

My still life

For my still life images, I used objects that represent me, I also thought that I could push my hand or face into this pin art toy to fit the theme weird and wonderful. I had some time in the studio and also time to use photoshop. Using photoshop I tried to incorporate Andy Warhol into my work.
